dating in Switzerland

The other day Meredith and I were sharing the story of how we met and started dating with some of our friends over here, and they commented on how there really isn't a "dating culture" over here anymore per se. Today I realized why this is the case. Allow me, if you will, to experience the costs of a simple date here in Switzerland. (Disclaimer: This wasn't an actual date I took Meredith on, so don't get all worked up that it involves us going to Burger King!)

Train tickets for 2 people: $20
2 "value" meals at the new Burger King: $30
2 tickets at the movie theater: $35
popcorn and 2 sodas at the theater: $18
2 McFlurries at the McDonalds just below the theater: $10
Total: $113

Now I am guessing that your lady is not going to be flattered that you spent $113 on the evening when it involves stopping off at both McDonalds and Burger King. To do something that would provide a more positive impression on the girl you are trying to woo, you can expect to tack on another $50 to that bill at the minimum. Given the above scenario and the fact that talking on your cell phone is also ridiculously expensive, the guys here in Switzerland have arrived at what I see as the obvious conclusion, "Forget dating - I think we will just spend a night texting each other over IM and our cell phones and then meet up at the train station to make out a little."

Funny. I read it to Caleb and we were cracking up. Sounds really romantic.
